What is the Episcopal Lay Preaching Network?
The Episcopal Lay Preaching Network (ELPN) is a community dedicated to supporting lay preachers across the Episcopal Church. We exist to provide community, continuing education, and advocacy for those called to proclaim the Gospel as lay preachers.
Who is the network for?
ELPN is for licensed lay preachers in the Episcopal Church, as well as those discerning a call to lay preaching, or supporting lay preaching ministries. Clergy and others involved in preaching, formation, or homiletics are also welcome to participate in many of our offerings.
Do I need to be licensed to join or participate?
No. While much of our programming is designed with licensed lay preachers in mind, you do not need to be licensed to join ELPN or attend most events. Some offerings may be tailored to specific roles, and this will always be clearly stated.
What kinds of offerings does ELPN provide?
Our offerings include:
- Online webinars and workshops
- Training and continuing education opportunities
- Small-group learning experiences, including exegesis groups
- Networking and community-building opportunities
- Annual gatherings and/or conferences
We are intentionally building offerings that support lay preachers at every stage of experience.
How much does membership cost?
Membership in ELPN is $60 per year—about $5 a month. Members receive access to all of our offerings, along with discounted registration fees for events such as our annual conference.
Do I have to be a member to attend events?
Some events will be open to non-members, often at a higher registration rate. Most offerings are free to members and have access to special members-only content and opportunities.
Are events recorded?
Many of our webinars and online events will be recorded and made available to members afterward. When an event will be recorded, this will be clearly noted in the event description.
Are offerings lectionary-based?
Some offerings will engage the lectionary directly, while others—like thematic or seasonal webinars—will explore preaching more broadly. We believe both approaches are valuable, and our programming reflects that balance.
Are ELPN offerings specific to a particular theological perspective?
ELPN reflects the breadth and diversity of the Episcopal Church. Our offerings are grounded in Episcopal theology and practice while honoring a wide range of voices, contexts, and preaching styles.
How is ELPN connected to the Episcopal Preaching Foundation?
ELPN is a partner organization of the Episcopal Preaching Foundation. This partnership allows us to build on a strong foundation of preaching excellence while focusing specifically on the needs of lay preachers.
Will there be in-person events?
Yes. While many offerings will be online to ensure accessibility, we also plan to host in-person gatherings, including an annual conference. Details will be shared as they become available.
